This book is the third in the 6-book series written by Prof. P. Sambamoorthy titled South Indian Music. This series is considered as a primer for any serious student of Carnatic music interested in its theory and musicology. In this seventh edition of the third book, Prof. Sambamoorthy elucidates on Ragas, the classification of ragas, the 72 Melakarthas and the presentation of different ragas. The book has a chapter dedicated to different musical instruments and how they are played.
About the Author
Pichu Sambamoorthy (1901 - 1973) was an Indian musicologist, writer and the professor of musicology at the Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati. He was the author several books on music, including A Dictionary of South Indian Music and Musicians, Great composers etc. He was awarded the Madras Music Academys Sangeetha Kalanithi in 1972. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan, in 1971, for his contributions to music.
